How low can I push the minimum wall thickness values in 3D printing?

Our recommended minimum wall thickness measurements are fairly conservative. We’ve found these wall thickness give us the most consistent durable results over a wide range of different designs.

However, depending on the design of an object, it is possible for some of our materials to be printed with thinner geometry than our recommended minimum wall thicknesses. At your request we may be able to send your design to production "as is" and see how it comes out.

In those cases there are a few thing you need to be aware of:

Your design may still be rejected. 

If our production manager believes this may jeopardize the other parts in the build chamber, we may reject the design completely.

If we reject the part before it is built, you will get a chance to update your design.

Having a part rejected will add time to the overall making time of your design.

We cannot guarantee the success of your print. 

Often very thin parts simply don’t print at all. If your part fails during building, you will not be refunded.

We will not replace any broken prints.

Thin parts are much more likely to break during cleaning, shipping and handling. While we do our best to look after your parts, breakages can happen.

We will contact you if your design is thinner than our recommended minimum wall thickness. We can’t read minds (yet!), so expect us to recommend you thicken up your design first. If you’re aware of the risks, just let us know you’re prepared and to go ahead with the original design file.

Just because we printed it once doesn't necessarily mean it will print next time.

While we strive to offer a consistent service factors can change over time. This industry is still very new and we're learning stuff all the time. Occasionally we have to tweak our processes as we go along. If your design is right at the limit of what is possible it will be subject to rejection each time you choose to make it.

The absolute unprintable minimum values are*:

Durable Plastic - 0.76mm / 0.03"
Durable Fine Plastic - 0.51mm / 0.02"

Superfine Plastic - 0.76mm / 0.03"
Durable Gloss Plastic - 1.5mm / 0.06" 
Rainbow ceramic - 0.51mm / 0.02"
Stainless Steel and Gold Plate - 1.5mm / 0.06"
Glazed Ceramic - 2mm / 0.08"

Pushing the boundaries of a 3D printer doesn’t always end in success - test the thin parts with a small print (or just a section of your design) before committing to a full-size build, to avoid disappointment.
